After years of rehabilitation, Loki finally began to trust once again, bonding with his keepers at Coda Falconry
Lokis Story
Loki joined the team at Coda Falconry in 2013 as part of a rehabilitation program. Loki is a Common Raven (Corvus corax) who was bred in captivity in the UK and was raised by humans so he wouldn’t survive in the wild. It’s illegal in the UK to release captive-bred birds into the wild so he was bred for a life in captivity. At 1 year old, Loki came to Coda Falconry which is a bird of prey centre based in West London, England. It was clear that Loki hadn’t been well treated and was shy, aggressive and missing lots of feathers. He was very nervous and aggressive towards people due to him being mistreated in the past by his previous owner. With a lot of hard work, dedication and love from the Coda Falconry team, Loki began to heal and is now a happy, free flying and fun loving raven – he has the whole sky to fly in and chooses to return to his home at the end of the day.
Through Loki’s rehabilitation story, he has touched many hearts and minds across the world and has inspired the team at Coda Falconry to create a registered charity called the “Featherwell Foundation” (registered charity number 1203254) which raises funds to rehabilitate and rescue wild and captive raptors (and of course corvids!) across the world.
We want the futures of every bird in our care to be as bright and happy as Loki and we love the fact that he has become an ambassador for corvids and bird rescue on a global platform.
Elliots Story
Elliot Manarin is a wildlife educator and raptor specialist whose work bridges the gap between scientific research and public understanding. With over a decade of experience in raptor rehabilitation and corvid behaviour studies, he has developed a unique expertise in avian intelligence and human-wildlife connections.
Elliot’s journey began in raptor rehabilitation, where he helped set up Coda Falconry and worked hands-on with hawks, owls, and eagles, learning their behaviours and rehabilitation needs. This centre led to his specialisation in corvids, particularly ravens, and his ongoing partnership with Loki – an exceptionally intelligent raven who has become both colleague and teacher. Together, they demonstrate the remarkable cognitive abilities of these often-misunderstood birds.
With a professional background rooted in avian science and conservation, Elliot has extensive experience in raptor training and rehabilitation, working closely with wildlife centers to care for and release injured birds of prey. Elliot’s work in avian behavior research has focused on the problem-solving abilities and social dynamics of corvids, contributing to a deeper understanding of bird intelligence. Passionate about wildlife education, Elliot has developed programs that make ornithology engaging and accessible to audiences of all ages. Additionally, Elliot has contributed to conservation media through involvement in documentaries and photography projects that highlight the remarkable cognitive abilities of birds.
When not observing raven behaviour or working with raptors, Elliot can be found running wildlife photography workshops, researching avian folklore across cultures, or explaining why you should never challenge a raven to a memory game.
Based in London UK, Elliot continues to advocate for evidence-based understanding of avian intelligence while developing innovative approaches to wildlife education and conservation.
